General questions
What is the maximum number of people on our holidays?
The maximum number of people on any of our holidays is seven. It is a generally recognised ratio by professional mountain tour organisations that a ratio of one guide to a group of eight is an acceptable number in terms of safety. It is also a more positive holiday experience for everyone.
What level of fitness and experience is required to enjoy the tour?
A reasonable level of fitness is required on all our holidays. However previous hill walking experience is not essential. Please see our walk grading for detailed description.
What equipment will I need?
It is essential that you have the correct equipment for each holiday. As a minimum you will require equipment such as waterproof jacket, and trousers, warm clothing (not cotton), hat, gloves, boots and a walking day rucksack. Please see our equipment recommendations for a comprehensive list. It lists everything you will need and also some equipment that is optional.
What will our accommodation be like?
We use small hotels or guest houses which are 2 – 3 star. They are comfortable and friendly places to stay. Rooms are normally en-suite.
Do you offer single room accommodation?
Single rooms are offered on most of our trips but they are limited so they are allocated on a first come first served basis. You can book a single room as long as there is one available. Most single rooms do incur a single supplement, details of which can be found in the trip dossier.
Are all meals included?
All our holidays include breakfast and a packed lunch each day.
Do you cater for vegetarians?
Yes we do. Please advise any specific dietary requirements when you book.
How will I know if the trip will be confirmed?
Most of our trips do go ahead as planned and it is uncommon for one not to take place. However we may cancel an unconfirmed advertised trip four weeks before the trip is due to start. If this were to happen we will offer you an alternative trip that suits you. If an alternative does not suit we would offer a full refund. Each trip requires a minimum of two bookings before being confirmed. If your trip is unconfirmed and due to start within a couple of months then do get in touch and we will go through the options.
When is the best time to visit the Scottish Highlands?
Scottish weather can be very changeable. What the weather is going to be like is often asked about. The east of Scotland which includes the Cairngorm National Park is a drier region than the West Highlands. Scotland does have some of the wettest places but because of the mountains and how they affect the weather systems it also means that Scotland also has some dry areas also.
The months with the greatest amount of sunshine historically are May and September if a little cooler than June, July and August. April and October can often be good months for sunshine. Your guide has an excellent local knowledge of the mountain regions. They will be checking weather reports daily and will adjust the schedule if necessary to ensure you get the most out of your holiday. The changeable weather actually adds to the experience. The changing light has a magical effect on the landscape and atmosphere. The landscape has vibrant colour greens and purples and some amazing waterfalls.
Do you cancel if the weather is bad?
We will not cancel. However we may alter the holiday schedule if the weather is bad enough to affect the safety of the group. We may change the day of a specific route or find an alternative route. It is often the case that Scotland’s mountain regions has very different weather conditions occurring simultaneously.
How much do your holiday tours cost?
For all our holidays please check our holiday pages.
What is your policy on cancellation?
For a full explanation please see our booking conditions.
Do I need insurance for my holiday?
While Mountain Journey Scotland has public liability insurance we are not liable for accidents out with our control. We therefore strongly advise that you take out insurance for the duration of your holiday. This will cover cancellation, injury, death, loss or damage to personal belongings and liability to third parties. All overseas visitors must have insurance to cover accidents and repatriation.
